Micro Blogging Fun


Microblogging is a relatively new way of sharing information. An off-shoot of traditional blogging, microblogging has seen the miniaturization of information so that it is used to send information in extremely small bits. Some of the ways that microblogging takes place is in the form of sending text messages, using email or sending digital audio.

The real distinction between blogging and microblogging is that the latter is made up of increasingly smaller file sizes. Where blogging could be full-page or several pages of text, a microblog could simply be a single sentence or an image. Some microblogs take the form of short videos lasting just a few seconds. The topics in microblogs vary considerably also. People share personal information while others send company information or information on products. In a nutshell, microblogging is the new way to share all manner of information with greater precision and brevity.

The two most popular forms of microblogs today are Twitter and Facebook. Others are Tumblr, Jaiku, Squeelr and Beeing. The social networking websites such as Facebook allow for microblogging through a feature known as status update.

The power of microblogging
While microblogging services started as strict social networking places, they have since grown to a force to be reckoned with because of their speed in delivering information. Through microblogging, it is now possible to send very quick messages and updates in real time.

In addition to providing information quickly, microblooging is also emerging as a great marketing tool. With growth in internet use, people are having less and less face to face communication and conversation is increasingly taking place through email and internet chat. In many organizations, some form of microblogging is used for communication between workers. This has both advantages and disadvantages. The strength of microblogging in an organizational setting is that it allows for fast communication of information to many people instantly. The downside is that this form of communication is likely to erode the ability of co-workers to connect.

Another concern about microblogging in an organization is that it is likely to compromise privacy. Since information is broadcast to a large number of people, the risk of work-related information that should be possessed by just a few people reaching the wrong people increases considerably. For some companies, this is especially critical since sensitive corporate information could end up with adversaries or competitors.

When all is said and done, microblogging seems the only way to go and it is up to organizations to see how they could use this new way of communicating to help build the organizations. Since it is a great, fast and inexpensive way of sharing information, microblogging has the potential to benefit companies and individuals more than it can hurt them.
